volunteer opportunities
NEW MARK CARE CENTER
As summer time quickly approaches, we hope you’ll consider dropping in to volunteer. If you are a little uncertain or apprehensive about becoming a volunteer, we have included a list of friendly suggestions when visiting or volunteering with the elderly.
NORTHLAND THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER
Volunteers are a vital part of Northland Therapeutic Riding Center’s therapeutic riding program, donating more than 2,500 hours each year. They say there is something magical about the barn and the camaraderie of the volunteers, staff, and riders. “It feels special”, volunteers say, “to be part of a program that makes such a difference in so many lives.”
NTRC needs you. Experience with horses is not necessary for all positions since many volunteer positions extend beyond the barn. You just have to want to help. Volunteers can assist as horse leaders or side walkers in the therapeutic riding classes, grooming and tacking of our special horses, or share your accounting, writing, photography, computer, or organizational skills with our center. Whatever your talent or interest, there is a perfect place for you at NTRC. Volunteer schedules are flexible. Volunteers need to be 15 years of age or older and in good physical condition to lead horses or sidewalk with students.
NTRC provides a three-hour volunteer orientation for all those interested in helping. You will learn about therapeutic riding, important safety procedures, and receive hands-on experience with our special horses.
For further information about volunteer opportunities, call 816-808-1106.

As summer time quickly approaches, we hope you’ll consider dropping in to volunteer. If you are a little uncertain or apprehensive about becoming a volunteer, we have included a list of friendly suggestions when visiting or volunteering with the elderly.
- Volunteer to help with one of the special events, help with manicures, assist with arts and crafts or help out with BINGO.(contact Activity department for their daily schedule and best times to volunteer).
- Get acquainted/develop a friendship-listen attentively and encourage them to share their life story, thoughts, feelings, memories of significant events in their life, favorite foods/flowers/hobbies and interest, etc.
- Choose a few topics to talk about in advance-maybe you took a recent vacation; you had an interesting experience recently or share a story with them.
- Bring along some pictures or photo albums.
- Take an interest and ask questions about their mementos or photos you see in their room.
- Bring a small gift such as a little plant, find out their favorite flowers, make a card yourself, some homemade cookies/bread or find out what they enjoy snacking on and make or bring that food item.(always make sure you check with their charge nurse PRIOR to purchasing or bringing in any food items-for their special dietary considerations).
- Ask if they enjoy pets and check with facility about their policies. At New Mark, if your pet has their current vaccinations, have a loving/easy temperament and are kept on a leash---we encourage pet visits…(of course, no pets allowed in the our dining areas during meal times please.)
- Spend time reading one of their favorite books, an inspirational book or share a poem.
- Share music or have them help you in a sing-a-long of their favorite musical selections/hymns, etc.
- Ask them about their interest, if they enjoy watching movies, do they like jigsaw puzzles, do they like to play cards, do they like board games(checkers, trivia games, Are you smarter than a 5th grader, Yahtzee, etc…) or maybe they would enjoy beating you in a WII video game. Some of our residents really enjoy these and we would be happy to assist you in obtaining these items from our activity cabinets and family/tv areas.
- Please contact Megan Hokanson to find out more about volunteering at New Mark Care Center at 734-4433 ext 4230 or Angela Troncin, Activity Director, ext 4214.
